Happiness: An Ode to Health and Wellbeing

It you have a healthy body and mind then happiness will follow. All the three elements are interlinked to each other.

Human beings live longer and have a heightened sense of wellbeing. This sense of wellbeing is greatly influenced by having an optimistic outlook towards life. Further, the word ‘wellbeing’ is relative in nature. First, it might depend from person to person. Second, natural wellbeing takes into account both mental and physical health – both are required to keep us happy. Long story short, health, happiness and well-being are actually interconnected.

There is, however, more to health than just this interconnectivity. Health, first and foremost, is not just the absence of disease. Actually, it is something that allows people to cope with the environment in which they are living so that they can live a productive as well as a fruitful life.

Health in general is dependent on our overall socio-economic and personal development. This dependency is responsible for promoting wellness. Therefore, excellent wellness connotes to excellent life. That’s why having a good life along with maintaining impeccable life standards is bound to ensure top-notch wellness and boost health in the process.

In order to maintain good physical health, there are many activities and practices that are to be undertaken. Some of them include an ample amount of physical activity coupled with a well-balanced diet.

Humans are social creatures; therefore, their mental health is dependent on the amount of sociability they display. Upholding social ties and other positive emotions can contribute to good health.

At the end of the day, ensuring good mental and physical health will ultimately improve wellbeing and overall health. Both will provide a sense of content that in turn will increase the secretion of Serotonin – the hormone which regulates mood, prevents depression and makes a person happy.

There are many problems that are actually robing away the state of wellbeing from mankind – a major one is air pollution. Currently, it is increasing at an alarming rate. This increase has a negative impact on health due to being largely responsible for respiratory diseases like asthma and lung cancer.

Not many people know that indoor air pollution plays a great role in increasing the pollution levels. The pulmonary diseases are often being a cause of concern and this in turn is he feels causing stress and anxiety among humans. Pollution levels caused by allergens like pollen, dust, mites along with chemicals can cause indoor pollution. People of old age and babies are susceptible to this problem. As mentioned earlier, good healthiness is largely responsible for happiness. Therefore, it is obvious that with so many diseases in existence, happiness will be nowhere to be seen.

Companies like Blueair are ensuring that this does not take place with their air purifiers that remove air pollution with homes and offices. These devices clean the indoor air from pollutants in a manner that can be best-described as phenomenal. Don’t Allow Allergies to Interrupt your Sleep

Allergies from airborne allergens take place when a person inhales them as he or she breathes in air. They cause irritation and inflammation in the nasal passage.

Further, people will allergies can also get sleep-related disorders like insomnia – as revealed by a study. Two groups were compared – the first one comprised people who had been treated for allergic rhinitis; the second one comprised people who were completely healthy and free from any sort of allergies. According to the results, sleep-related disorders were more common in people with allergies than those without.

Today, with Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) on the rise, it is quite common to find an abundance of allergens in homes. Some examples are dust, pollen, mites, moulds and pet dander. These particles can provoke the release of a chemical in the body that can cause watery eyes, nasal congestion, sneezing, and also runny nose. These symptoms are greatly responsible for poor sleep. This in turn can also result in daytime sleepiness and fatigue.

These days, India seems to be in the vice grip of air pollution; especially, New Delhi. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared the city as the most polluted one in the country. In such a situation, what can be the solutions to combat air pollution especially, IAP? Although, nasal sprays can be effective, the advisable options have been deemed as air purifiers. They are seen as the best solutions for protecting families members especially children who are extremely vulnerable to allergies.

A home air purifier vested with advanced technologies, such as High-efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA), has the maximum potential of removing allergens from the air. Purifiers made by Blueair (www.blueair.in; 011 4606 7140) are the best in the business as they can remove 99.97 per cent of allergens from the air. In a way, they are turning out to be effective insomnia combatants for sure. While sharing his take on air pollution in India, Mr. Vijay Kannan, Blueair India Head, pointed out the potential of HEPA filters in terms of annihilating particles that are as small as 0.1 microns. The brilliant performance of the Blueair Sense+, Blueair Classic and Blueair Pro is firmly proving the worth of his opinion with every passing day.

How to Breathe Free from IAP?

Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) has become a predominant existence in our lives; however, we can certainly mend the damage done by ensuring the implementation of certain practices. But, before we go about implementing them, we should fully understand the meaning of IAP.

As the name implies, IAP simply means the pollution of the air within four walls. However, there have been many spin-offs to this definition. The best among them has been given by the World Health Organization (WHO) and entails the rise in the number of harmful pollutants, such as fine particles and carbon monoxide, in the indoor air due to inefficient cooking and heating practices, for example, cooking on open fire or traditional stoves using solid fuel (wood, charcoal, coal, dung and crop wastes).

Now let’s come to the different practices for curbing IAP – as we had mentioned in the first paragraph:

1. Minimizing the emission of chemical pollutants: As complicated as this might sound, it can be done by ensuring the following:

a. No smoking within four walls
b. Minimizing the usage of solvent-based cleaners and the ones with strong fragrances
c. Ensuring that activities like paint stripping, hobby soldering or gluing, painting, sanding and rock polishing are undertaken outside
d. Ensuring to turn off cars within garages and lawnmowers when not in use

2. Controlling moisture: IAP is inevitable in homes with high amounts of moisture. Therefore, the following things should be undertaken for ensuring that the moisture content within homes remains at a bare minimum:

a. Using dehumidifiers for keeping homes dry and maintaining relative humidity levels to less than 60 per cent
b. Repairing leaks within walls and floors as soon as they appear
c. Taking immediate action in the situations of flooding or water drainage, namely:
i. Removing wet materials
ii. Discarding porous materials that have mold
iii. Ensuring that washroom exhaust fans are kept on while showering
iv. Ensuring that indoor plants are not over-watered as this encourage mold-growth

3. Ensuring impeccable ventilation: It is extremely important to ensure smooth passage of air within homes and offices. The following practices should be undertaken.

a. Keeping windows and doors open in summers but not during spring and fall seasons
b. Ensuring to properly install mechanical filters and changing them periodically
c. Using air purifiers for ensuring that the indoor air is consistently purified. Good choices are Blueair Classic and Blueair Sense+
d. Making sure that furnaces, fireplaces, heaters, exhaust fans are vented outside and not towards windows and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) intakes
On a closing note, IAP-free homes are ones that belong to people aware about the harms that can occur from airborne particulates. In fact, the awareness level is the mainstay for ensuring that the air indoors stays clean, fresh and free of air pollutants.

Around 20 volunteers including a team of street-play artists educated the citizens of Gurgaon about the rising pollution levels in the city.

According to doctors in Gurgaon, approximately 30 per cent of families living in the city have no less than one individual having fallen prey to Asthma or other respiratory diseases. They also said that the odd-even scheme has got people to talk about pollution; however, there is still a need for spreading awareness about pollution. A city based pulmonologist reportedly said that small gestures are central to controlling pollution levels. Examples of these gestures include turning off the engine while stopping at a traffic signal and avoiding the burning of waste.

The initiative is part of a campaign called Clean Air India Movement (CLAIM) which as per the acclaimed pulmonologists has been to be extremely useful in spreading awareness about pollution. CLAIM is a pan-Indian movement to spread awareness about air pollution. It originated in Gurgaon and now encompasses many cities of the country, for example, New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata. It is spearheaded by Blueair India Head, Mr. Vijay Kannan, who believes that CLAIM will make people aware of the importance of those simple changes in their lifestyle that can contribute in lowering pollution.
